How to Enable or Disable Hibernation in Windows

This article is all about how to enable or disable Hibernation in Windows operated PCs. Hibernation is special power saving mode which is designed for laptops to save power of the laptop for a long time period. Generally, this mode is used in laptops which do not have easy access to the power supply for an extended amount of time. In other words, we can say that Hibernation is a feature of Windows operating system that acts as a middle stage in between completely powering your laptop down and putting it to sleep.

Hibernation is the slightly different from sleep feature in Windows because sleep mode keeps your all the running programmes in the memory (RAM) and do not prevent your system from drawing power to keep the RAM running on your system. While in the Hibernation all your running programmes and open documents are stored on your computers offline hard disk in a hidden protected system file that is located at C:/hiberfil.sys which generally consumes disk space equal to 75% of your computers RAM size.

enable or disable hibernation in windows

Hibernation also helps us to reduce power consumption because it transfers all the running processes on the hard disk and prevents RAM from running so power consumption is very low. So, after hibernation when you again start your system it transfers all the processes from hard disk to RAM and boots more quickly than a complete shutdown so you can easily pick up where you left off.

Hibernation is enabled by default and it does not heart your computer. So it is not necessary to disable it even when you don’t use it on your system. If you disable hibernate from your system then you can not be able to take advantage of windows 10s fast startup feature. So do not disable it otherwise it is not necessary to remove it from your system. Here we discuss various methods by which we can easily disable hibernate from our system. So let’s start here how to disable Hibernate on your Windows operated PC.

METHOD 1: Disable or Enable Hibernate using Command Prompt

1.  First of all search for Command prompt and run it on your system with Administrator privilege. To do so you can use Cortana search box and choose Command Prompt (admin) option then click on the yes option when a popup appears on the screen. Figure is shown below

command prompt as admin option

2.  Now in the command prompt window type given below command and press the enter key to disable Hibernate and close the command prompt window. Now you can check that the hibernate option is disabled from your system.

powercfg.exe /hibernate off
[/css]

3.  If you want to enable hibernation again on your system then simply open Command prompt again with Administrator privilege and type given below command in it then simply press Enter key.

[css]
powercfg.exe /hibernate on
[/css]

4.  Your Hibernation feature again restored on your system by using above command. You can check that by clicking on the power button which is present in the start menu.

Method 2: Disable or Enable Hibernation using Registry Editor

1.  First of all open Windows Registry Editor on your system. To do so open Run search box by pressing Windows key+R combination on your system. Then type “regedit” and press enter to open Windows Registry Editor on your system.

2.  After that in Registry Editor Window Navigate to  “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power”.

3.  Now in the Power option look downward and search for the “HibernateEnabled” option and double click on it to change its default setting according to our needs.

4.  After clicking on it a popup appears on the windows screen in it you can observe that the value data is set for the Hibernate option. If you want to disable  Hibernate from your system then simply enter 0 in the value data field. It also removes Hibernate and hiberfil.sys file from your system drive.

5.  If you want to Enable Hibernate again for your system then simply set value data to 1 from 0 and save that setting. It enables hibernation feature on your system and also restores the “hiberfil.sys” on your system.

6.  After that restart your system for the changes which are made by us to take place.

How to check if your PC is protected or not from Meltdown and Spectre

Microsoft Windows provides us a PowerShell script with the help of which we can check that our PC is protected or not from Meltdown and Spectre bugs. But it will need some command line to run it on your PC, so don’t worry we will provide all the commands to run the PowerShell scripts to check Meltdown and Spectre bugs. This process is very easy to follow, now we will learn how to follow it.

Step 1: Open PowerShell script

On Windows 10, right-click on start menu button and then you will see a list of the programme, from this list select the “Windows PowerShell(Admin)” and then Windows PowerShell window will open where we will run the commands.

On Windows 7 and 8, click on the search bar and then search for “Windows PowerShell (Admin)” and then click on it.

Windows PowerShell in Start Menu

Step 2: Now type the given command into the “Windows PowerShell (Admin)” window, and then press Enter key to install the script on our PC system.

Install-Module SpeculationControl

Step 3: Now if it prompted us to install the NuGet provider by asking “Do you want PowerShell to install and import the NuGet provider now?”, simply type “Y” and press Enter key to proceed installation.

After that, it will again ask “Are you sure you want to install the modules from ‘PSGallery’?”, then again simply type “Y” and press Enter key to proceed.

Install Module in Windows PowerShell

Step 4: Here the standard execution policy will not allow us to run this script on our PC. So, to run this script first we will save the current settings so we can restore them later easily. And then we will change the execution policy so the script can run our PC. To change the execution policy run the given commands into Windows PowerShell.

$SaveExecutionPolicy = Get-ExecutionPolicy
Set-ExecutionPolicy RemoteSigned -Scope Currentuser

Step 5: After running above command it will ask to confirm, then simply type “Y” and press Enter key.

set execution policy

Step 6: Now we will again run the following commands into Windows PowerShell (Admin).

Import-Module SpeculationControl
Get-SpeculationControlSettings

Step 7: Now our PC will show us information about the appropriate hardware supported by our PC. But here we will notice for two things that are:

The “Hardware support for branch target injection mitigation is present” refers to the BIOS update and UEFI firmware update that we will require from our PC manufacturer. It should be “True” to protect our PC from Meltdown and Spectre Bugs.

The “Windows OS support for branch target injection mitigation is present” refers to the software update from the Microsoft. To protect against Meltdown and Spectre bug it should be “True”.

speculation control settings

In the above picture, these commands tell us that we don’t have both windows patch and UEFI/BIOS update. It means our computer is not safe from Meltdown and Spectre Attack.

Step 8: Now we will set the execution policy to back its original settings, for that we have to run the following command on our PC:

Set-ExecutionPolicy $SaveExecutionPolicy -Scope Currentuser

After running above command, simply type “Y” and then press Enter key to confirm above command.

current user execution policy command

How to get the Windows Update patch for your PC

After running above commands if we see the following line:

Windows OS support for branch target injection mitigation is present: False

It means your PC has not yet installed the Operating System update which helps your PC to protects from Meltdown and Spectre attacks. Now we will learn about how to get the Windows update patch for your PC.

How To Create Wi-Fi Hotspot In Windows PC

This article is all about how to make a Wi-Fi Hotspot in windows PC. Before this, we will discuss why we need to create a Wi-Fi Hotspot in windows OS based Computer.

Suppose we have two computer and one computer connected to the network cable(LAN), and if we want internet access in both the computer then we can share internet connection from one computer to another by enabling hotspot on one computer. Suppose you are traveling by airplane or train, and if you want to access internet connection without spending more money than you can access internet connection by enabling the Wi-Fi Hotspot in the partner computer easily. And sometimes when we use the dongle to access the internet connection, but from one dongle we can use the internet connection on one computer only. So if you want to share the dongle internet connection in two or more than 2 computer than it can be done by making the hotspot in one computer in which the dongle is connected.

Before, making a Wi-Fi Hotspot on your computer, making sure that your windows device has installed a wireless network card or not. If not, then we are not able to create Wi-Fi Hotspot on our device without the wireless network card. And if you have installed wireless network card on your windows computer then you can make a Wi-Fi hotspot on your windows computer.

In the windows OS, Wi-Fi Hotspot can be turned ON by two methods. First, by the command prompt, and second by the Ad-Hoc wireless connection method in windows settings. Here we will create the Wi-Fi Hotspot on the windows computer using Ad-Hoc wireless connection method. Because this method is simple and here we do not need to write command in command prompt.

According to which an ad hoc network is a temporary network used for sharing files, presentations, or an Internet connection among multiple computers and devices. And to establish a secure connection between two computer, computers and devices in ad hoc networks must be within 30 feet of each other. And if you are currently connected to a wireless network, you might be disconnected when you set up this network. So after reading this instruction, we will click on the Next option.

set up and Ad hoc network screen

Step 6: After that, we will provide a network name which will display on the other computer as Wi-Fi Hotspot. And here we will choose WPA-2 personal security type because it is more secure than other types. And then we will enter the password to protect the hotspot from an unknown user. After configure these setting we will check the save this network option. And then click on the Next option.

set up an ad hoc network screen

How To Show And Hide file Extensions In Windows 10

The term “file extension”, we all heard this term many times. But are we know, actually what is the mean of file extension, why it is used with the different type of files, and what will happen if we change any file extension from its original ones to another(fake extension). Actually, no one cares about these things, so here I will tell you all about the term “file extension”. And here I will also explain the process of how to show file extensions in Windows 10 and how to hide file extension in Windows 10 file explorer.

Also Read: How to show a permanently hidden file, folder and videos in Windows operating system

A file extension is a string of the characters which attached to a file name to define the format of the file in the operating system. A file extension is usually preceded by a full stop after the file name. File extension normally made of three characters, but it may also be one, two, and four characters long.

file extensions format

In the Windows 10 operating system, default file explorer settings don’t show file extension with the file names, from here we can’t recognize the file types in the file explorer. So, to identify the file types, we have to show the file extensions of the files in the operating system or in your PC.

Why we should show file extensions with the file names

I here always recommend PC users to make windows settings to always show file extensions with the file names on their system. Because in default windows 10 settings we cannot see file extensions and sometimes we are not aware of this. And in the windows operating system file names allows you to use multiple full stops and the malware file many time uses a multiple extension in a file name. Let us take an example to understand this situation.

Suppose you have downloaded a file from internet with the file name “software.docx.exe” and when you will see this file in the downloaded folder, you would see only “software.docx” (because in windows 10 default setting file extension doesn’t show) And by taking it as a word document, you will open this file and then this malware will infect your PC, and now you have a malware in your PC. So to recognize these malware files always set windows setting to show file extensions.

How file extension help us

There are different file type which has several different extensions. Such as document file have .doc, .docx, .odt extension and audio file have ,mp3, .wma .wav extension and many more. File extensions help us to identify the file type and it also helps the operating system to identify the related program to open the particular file. And file extension also helps us to identify the malicious program on the PC. So I would recommend you to check extensions of files before installing them on your computer.

File extensions help us to download the desired file. So if you want to download a particular programme from the internet, then you should see the file extension before you start downloading to avoid from downloading the malicious programme. Now I will let you know how to enable the file extensions setting on the windows 10.

Method to show or hide file extensions in windows 10
