The term “file extension”, we all heard this term many times. But are we know, actually what is the mean of file extension, why it is used with the different type of files, and what will happen if we change any file extension from its original ones to another(fake extension). Actually, no one cares about these things, so here I will tell you all about the term “file extension”. And here I will also explain the process of how to show file extensions in Windows 10 and how to hide file extension in Windows 10 file explorer.
A file extension is a string of the characters which attached to a file name to define the format of the file in the operating system. A file extension is usually preceded by a full stop after the file name. File extension normally made of three characters, but it may also be one, two, and four characters long.
In the Windows 10 operating system, default file explorer settings don’t show file extension with the file names, from here we can’t recognize the file types in the file explorer. So, to identify the file types, we have to show the file extensions of the files in the operating system or in your PC.
Why we should show file extensions with the file names
I here always recommend PC users to make windows settings to always show file extensions with the file names on their system. Because in default windows 10 settings we cannot see file extensions and sometimes we are not aware of this. And in the windows operating system file names allows you to use multiple full stops and the malware file many time uses a multiple extension in a file name. Let us take an example to understand this situation.
Suppose you have downloaded a file from internet with the file name “software.docx.exe” and when you will see this file in the downloaded folder, you would see only “software.docx” (because in windows 10 default setting file extension doesn’t show) And by taking it as a word document, you will open this file and then this malware will infect your PC, and now you have a malware in your PC. So to recognize these malware files always set windows setting to show file extensions.
How file extension help us
There are different file type which has several different extensions. Such as document file have .doc, .docx, .odt extension and audio file have ,mp3, .wma .wav extension and many more. File extensions help us to identify the file type and it also helps the operating system to identify the related program to open the particular file. And file extension also helps us to identify the malicious program on the PC. So I would recommend you to check extensions of files before installing them on your computer.
File extensions help us to download the desired file. So if you want to download a particular programme from the internet, then you should see the file extension before you start downloading to avoid from downloading the malicious programme. Now I will let you know how to enable the file extensions setting on the windows 10.
